以賽亞書 53：1-3

1 他的子民回答：
誰會相信我們的傳報？
上主的大能向誰顯示呢？
2 這是上主的旨意：
他的僕人要像幼苗抽芽，
像花草在乾旱的土壤裡生根。
他既無威儀，也不英俊，
不能吸引我們的注意；
他的儀表平凡，
不能引起我們的傾慕。
3 他被藐視，被人棄絕；
他忍受痛苦，經歷憂患。
人都掩面不看他一眼；
他被藐視，我們不敬重他。

1 Who has believed what he has heard from us? And to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed?
2 For he grew up before him like a young plant, and like a root out of dry ground; he had no form or majesty that we should look at him, and no beauty that we should desire him.
3 He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief; and as one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not.

神的信息和人的看法之間存有很大的隔閡；神所「顯露」的（參1節；羅十16-17、21）跟人所向往（2節）及尊重的（3節）是相反的。可比較馬太福音二十七章39至44節描述對卑微的耶穌的嘲諷，以及哥林多前書一章23節講到人對傳揚十架道理的態度。「痛苦」及「憂患」二詞（3節）於第4節重覆，直譯是「痛楚」和「疾病」，讀者可意會為描述一位病人或心中痛苦的人（參耶十五18）。不過，這句子也可作別解，即描述醫生的甘願獻身，就是獻身於解決痛苦和病患之中。這大概是馬太福音八章17節征引以賽亞書五十三章4節的意義。
