古代近東，在口上按手任命 埃及的王室凈口禮儀所顯示的觀念，是使口部在說話之前作好準備。美索不達米亞的儀式則經常以凈化嘴唇，作為凈化全人的象征。特別對占卜祭司而言，這儀式是他們能夠出席諸神議會，回來報告所見之前的必經步驟。反之，耶和華將話語放在祂先知的口中，並不需要凈化儀式。
