耶利米書 1：14-15

14 他對我說：「將有災難從北方來，傾倒在這地方所有的居民。
15 因為我要召集北方所有的國家；它們的君王要在耶路撒冷城門和城牆周圍，以及猶大境內各城建立他們的政權。

15 For behold, I am calling all the tribes of the kingdoms of the north, declares the LORD, and they shall come, and every one shall set his throne at the entrance of the gates of Jerusalem, against all its walls all around and against all the cities of Judah.

北方列國 這話可以是指巴比倫或西古提，也可以是將來萬國進攻耶路撒冷的反響（見：結三十八～三十九；珥三；亞十二～十四）。北方經常是黑暗勢力的象征，這些勢力包括：非利士人、亞述人、亞蘭人。鑒於主要路線的位置，敵人通常除了從北面入侵耶路撒冷以外，別無他法。主前六二七年時，尚無證據證明巴比倫有能力入侵黎凡特地區。然而按照希臘史家希羅多德，西古提人正在這時向西亞洲發動侵略。
在城門口安設座位 城門口是君王公開執行職務的慣常地點。典禮和外交場合，以及訴訟程序可能都可以在此進行。烏加列史詩《阿赫特》描述達尼珥王坐在城門口，為孤兒寡婦斷案。征服城市的君王也是在城門口公開安設寶座，來審判該城及其領袖。最近在但城遺址的挖掘，在城門內部發現了一個似乎是石制的高台。這高台曾經一度有頂篷遮蓋，上面可能設有寶座。
