耶利米書10章1-5節

10:1 以色列人哪，要聽上主對你們所說的話。
10:2 他這樣說：你們不要隨從異國的風俗習慣。雖然他們被天空奇異的景象騷擾，你們不要像他們那樣驚恐。
10:3 他們所信奉的毫無價值，不過是林中砍下的木頭，由匠人所雕刻，
10:4 用金銀修飾，用釘釘牢，使它們不至於跌倒。
10:5 他們的偶像好像瓜田裡的稻草人：它們不能說話，不能走路，要人抬著走。所以不要怕它們！它們不能加害你們，也不能幫助你們。

10:1 Hear the word that the LORD speaks to you, O house of Israel.
10:2 Thus says the LORD: “Learn not the way of the nations, nor be dismayed at the signs of the heavens because the nations are dismayed at them,
10:3 for the customs of the peoples are vanity. A tree from the forest is cut down and worked with an axe by the hands of a craftsman.
10:4 They decorate it with silver and gold; they fasten it with hammer and nails so that it cannot move.
10:5 Their idols are like scarecrows in a cucumber field, and they cannot speak; they have to be carried, for they cannot walk. Do not be afraid of them, for they cannot do evil, neither is it in them to do good.”
今天的經文是說明上主要百姓不要效法其他國家敬拜偶像，因為那些偶像沒有能力。
當時偶像的形狀和大小各有不同。但通常都是用木頭雕成，包以錘平的金箔銀箔。其外貌基本上是人形（埃及的偶像除外，埃及偶像常常混合人與獸的特徵），但有獨特，甚至是制式化的姿勢、衣著、髮式，與華人的偶像狀況差不多。美索不達米亞的偶像需要廟宇每日供應食物、更衣，甚至沐浴。為偶像穿衣脫衣需要專門的工人，此外，又需要人負責洗濯，和在慶典時搬運偶像。
