耶利米書16章1-4節

16:1 上主又對我說：
16:2 「在這樣的地方，你不可結婚，不可生兒育女。
16:3 我要告訴你有關在這裡出生的孩子和父母將遭遇的事。
16:4 他們都要因疫症死亡；沒有人哀悼他們，埋葬他們。他們的屍體要像肥料堆在地上。他們要不是餓死，就是戰死；屍體成為飛鳥走獸的食物。

16:2 “You shall not take a wife, nor shall you have sons or daughters in this place.
16:3 For thus says the LORD concerning the sons and daughters who are born in this place, and concerning the mothers who bore them and the fathers who fathered them in this land:
16:4 They shall die of deadly diseases. They shall not be lamented, nor shall they be buried. They shall be as dung on the surface of the ground. They shall perish by the sword and by famine, and their dead bodies shall be food for the birds of the air and for the beasts of the earth.
今天的經文，大多數的英文譯本把 16:1-9 當作散文，使人從另一角度瞥見耶利米的生活，也有學者認為這是一種粗略的詩體，是一由簡略言論雜湊而成的作品。這段呈現的畫面是這樣：獨身的耶利米引人注意地不參加任何喪禮或婚禮，藉此把神的信息傳遞給猶太人。1-4節，上帝要耶利米不可以結婚生子，以便警告猶大人未來將有如無婚姻的人一般孤獨的死去，無人哀悼收屍。
