以賽亞書 40：1-4

1 我們的上帝說：
你們要安慰我的子民，
要安慰他們。
2 要鼓勵耶路撒冷的人民，
告訴他們：他們的苦難已經夠了；
他們的罪已蒙寬赦了。
我—上主已經徹底懲罰了他們的罪。
3 有一個聲音喊說：
要在荒野為上主預備道路；
要在沙漠為我們的上帝開闢大道。
4 每一山谷都要填滿；
大小山岡都要削平。
高低不平之地要成為平坦；
崎嶇的地面要成為平原。
5 那時候，上主的榮耀要顯示出來；
全人類都要看見。
上主這樣宣布了。

1 Comfort, comfort my people, says your God.
2 Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and cry to her that her warfare is ended, that her iniquity is pardoned, that she has received from the LORD’s hand double for all her sins.
3 A voice cries: “In the wilderness prepare the way of the LORD; make straight in the desert a highway for our God.
4 Every valley shall be lifted up, and every mountain and hill be made low; the uneven ground shall become level, and the rough places a plain.
5 And the glory of the LORD shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together, for the mouth of the LORD has spoken.”

古代近東的築路工程 古代近東的路大部分是沒有鋪好的（亞述晚期的幾條路除外）。雖然沒有鋪好，但是那些車輛交通用的路（努斯文件稱為「馬車路」）還是要常常立界線、弄平、維修。不過少有文獻提及築路或修路。高運量的路很少，主要是沿著貿易路線。所以有個藩國國王向馬里王抱怨，他只能沿著主要幹道繞路抵達敘利亞。亞述王很少以修築道路自誇，因為那是地方的職責。艾薩克哈頓在一個條約里下令，當他的兒子繼承王位，藩屬國必須臣服於他，並且「在各方面為他鋪平道路」。
