以賽亞書 42：23-25

23 你們當中有人要聽這話嗎？
從今以後要留心聽嗎？
24 是誰把雅各交給侵略者？
是誰把以色列交給掠奪者？
是上主自己，因為我們都得罪了他。
我們的行為不合他的標準；
我們沒有遵守他的法律。
25 因此，他向我們發烈怒，
使我們遭受戰爭的痛苦。
烽火困住我們，我們依舊沒有學到教訓；
烈焰焚燒我們，我們仍然麻木不仁。

23 Who among you will give ear to this, will attend and listen for the time to come?
24 Who gave up Jacob to the looter, and Israel to the plunderers? Was it not the LORD, against whom we have sinned, in whose ways they would not walk, and whose law they would not obey?
25 o he poured on him the heat of his anger and the might of battle; it set him on fire all around, but he did not understand; it burned him up, but he did not take it to heart.

這無能傳訊者的失敗（參撒下十八29）是以色列的失敗，他們且是故意的。他們本是約的承繼人（19節下；參下文注釋）；他們本有能力（20節）及信息（21節），去認識神的旨意；而且仍不斷提醒要留心「聽」從（23節）。即使他們現今身處的苦境，也是為了教導，而不是為了毀滅（25節下）；但可惜他們沒有學會功課。
